Young Canadian Adults Prefer Online Gaming - 05-10-08

May 10 - Some interesting statistics have been revealed following a survey conducted by pollster Allan Gregg about the entertainment preferences of today's Canadian adult population. The Montreal Gazette ran a piece about how Gregg's survey was released at the Canadian Gaming Summit, showing that young adults in Canada enjoy online gaming more than the elder adult community.

The young adults found technology driven entertainment, such as online gaming, much more attractive than other forms of entertainment. The survey also found that a third of Canadians admitted that they were gambling on a lesser scale than they were three years ago, but the young adult population (under 35s) were, in general, gambling more.

Despite the youth's obvious interest in online gaming in Canada, the industry is not able to enjoy this fact because Canadian online gaming is illegal. The survey revealed that 56% of the youth considered web based poker and online sportsbetting as completely acceptable forms of entertainment.

"Unfortunately for lottery jurisdictions in Canada, this younger group favors the technology driven gambling options of the future," said Gregg.

The survey, in which over 3000 people participated, also showed that only 20% of adults over the age of 55, and 35% of those over 35 enjoyed online sports wagering. Youngsters also expressed more interest in interactive online lottery games, using mobile devices to purchase lottery tickets and using in-home televisions to play casino games.

The Vice President of Canadian Gaming Association, Paul Burns, said that despite the fact that Canadian online gaming is illegal, citizens still manage to spend up to $400 million annually by accessing online gaming servers in foreign jurisdictions.
