Visa Bans Online Gambling Payments - 02-23-10 |
February 23 - Several weeks after
Mastercard found a way to block
casino payment to and from online gambling sites, the other credit card brand,
Visa,
followed suit.
It was reported this week that online gamblers are having problems paying for
their gaming entertainment using the credit card option, and American players
are not able to see their transactions completed.
While Visa has not come out with a statement regarding its latest policy, it
is generally believed that the decision was due to the Unlawful Internet
Gambling Enforcement Act, which may or may not be enforced in June.
This will depend on whether gambling proponents are successful in getting the
implementation of the law postponed once more, as they did in January.
It is unknown how many Americans actually use Visa for their online gambling
payment, with many preferring alternative methods such as
Neteller and other
e-wallets.
Over the years, and since the introduction of UIGEA laws in 2006, Americans
have already familiarized themselves with the alternative payment market and it
could be said that the majority have chosen this route to be on the safe side.
However, it is still believed that thousands will be affected by Visa's
decision to ban online gambling payments.
Visa and Mastercard were the last two credit companies offering the gambling
market their services, with other groups such as Discover and
American Express
banning gamblers many years ago.
Alternative payment companies now expect a surge of renewed interest in their
products as Visa cardholders seek out safe, reliable and discreet payment
options for their gambling action.
Thankfully, most online gambling sites accept a wide range of payment options
and even reward players with extra bonuses for paying with these methods.
