Utah Trying to Block Online Gambling Sites - 06-22-09

June 22 - The idea to introduce free wireless internet in a number of cities in Utah was a good one proposed by the Utah Transit Authority.

However, the authority is now faced with a new problem as it struggles to police the sites that citizens are and are not allowed to access through the free service.

The authority has tried to impose a filter that, theoretically, blocks Utahans from accessing a number of sites, however the state has only been successful with blatant pornography and other undesirable sites.

Online gambling sites have proven to be trickier to block, as the Utah Transit Authority admits that the system is not perfect.

In order to deter people from gambling online using the free wireless internet system, the authority has introduced a number of fines that can - and will - be issued to those caught gambling.

First time offenses come with a $300 fine, while further infractions could put a leisure player back $500 each time.

Strangely, the Utah Transit Authority will need to train its police to identify those using the system to gamble online.

It is believed that the state will have a hard time identifying which sites constitute genuine gambling and which don't. Some major sports news sites, for example, are known to offer sweepstake type prizes to their readers and authorities may inadvertently block these sites, placing them under the greater Online Gambling umbrella.

Utahans are not amused by the introduction of these new gambling morality forces patrolling buses. Many view this as a blatant violating of free speech principles and have called on authorities to reconsider their moves.
