UK Soccer Players Suspended for Online Betting - 08-04-09 |
August 4 - UK soccer players - David Mannix, Robert Williams, Andrew Mangan, Jay Harris and Peter Cavanagh - were all charged by the Football Association for placing bets on a soccer game that took place on the final day of the 2007/2008 season.
The Regulatory Commission of the Football Association has fined and suspended four of the players, while the case of the fifth player is still due to be heard.
The UK soccer betting scandal took place during a match between Accrignton Stanley (Coca Cola League Two) and Bury in May last year.
All five players were charged with placing bets on Bury to win the match.
UK bookmakers alerted the authorities that unusual betting patterns were taking place leading up to the match.
Bury eventually won the match by 2:0.
In a statement issued, the Chairman of the Regulatory Commission, Nicholas Stewart said: "All the charges against Andrew Mangan, David Mannix and Robert Williams, as well as the more serious charge against James Harris concerned betting on a match Accrington Stanley versus Bury on May 3, 2008."
"The Regulatory Commission has serious concerns that the outcome of the match may have been fixed although none of the players were charged with these offences," said Stewart. "The suspensions and fines are imposed because the FA rules restricting betting by players and others on matches or competitions in which they are involved are vital to ensure public confidence in the integrity of football and the absolute straightness of all football matches."
