UK Releases Results of Latest Gambling Survey - 05-06-08 |
May 6 - An independent survey taken out by the Gambling
Commission in the United Kingdom revealed some interesting facts about the
online gambling public in the country.
The study, taken out over an eight month period between June 2007
and March 2008, covered 8000 participants over the age of 18, thought to be
representative of the broad spectrum of ages and background in the
country.
Among the results of the gambling survey, it was shown that
8.8% of those interviewed took part in some form of remote gambling within the
past year. This gambling was mostly done via laptop, computer or a handheld
device (7.1 %), or else via mobile phone (2.4 %) and digital television (less
than 2 %).
An interesting fact was that more men than women took part in
online gambling activities and, in general, the typical age group within which
an online player falls is the 18 - 34 group.
The UK National Lottery Draw is a huge attraction for online
players, according to the gambling survey. Among those who were interviewed,
over 6% said that they had played the lottery within the past month.
Meanwhile, it was reported that the Gambling Commission is gearing
up for its major British Gambling Prevalence Study in 2010. This study, which
was commissioned in 1999 and 2007 in the past, is a sweeping, large-scale
research on the participation of British players in all types of gambling, as
well as the depth of problem gambling within society.
The Commission is hoping to see how the country's new gambling
regulations have affected society and whether they have managed to bring problem
gambling down.
