Things Looking Up for BetonSports Gary Kaplan - 05-03-08 |
May 3 - Gary Kaplan, the founder of what was once
considered one of top betting companies in the US gambling industry,
BetonSports, may have a reason to smile these days.
Kaplan has been incarcerated since 2006, after he was arrested by
US authorities on several charges, claiming that he and the company he helped
found were involved in illegal wagering activities under US legislation. Charges
were also brought against the company itself and its CEO. BetonSports closed
down almost immediately after the arrests.
Kaplan has since been battling to prove his innocence and has taken
on the best legal team to assist him. A close friend of the BetonSports founder
that said that since his arrest, Kaplan has gone through several top lawyers in
a bid to find the best one who can represent him.
This week, Kaplan learned that, thanks to his new lawyer, Chris
Flood, a magistrate judge has recommended that the prosecution drop several of
the charges against him. These charges include obstruction and tax evasion, and
could have added years of prison onto any sentence passed on Kaplan.
"He has had many lawyers and has fired five of them to date," said
the friend. "Gary also fired Ben Brafman."
The friend was referring to the same Brafman who was unsuccessful
in defending online gambling personality Jay Cohen. He also worked on the cases
of hip hop artist P. Diddy and several mobsters.
Cohen's friend noted that Chris Flood was "much more notable than
Brafman".
"Chris Flood of Flood and Flood was one of the best defense
attorneys in the ENRON case in Houston," he added.
