Tennis Pro in Hot Spaghetti for Online Sports Betting - 02-19-08

February 19 - While the biggest 'bane' in the world of professional sports is the use of illegal performance enhancing drugs like anabolic steroids, there may have emerged a new 'bad' kid on the block in terms of illegal online sports betting and thus the potential for match fixing.

Tennis is one sport that has of late become extremely susceptible to this growing problem, with the latest scandal involving Italian tennis pro, Giorgio Galimberti. Galimberti was recently found guilty by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) of betting on tennis matches online.

What isn't clear is whether the player bet on his own matches or not. However, as a punishment, the ATP fined Galimberti $35,000 and suspended him from the ATP tour for 100 days. Now ranked 1009th in the world, at his peak Galimberti was ranked 115th by the ATP.

Galimberti makes four the number of Italian players that have recently been suspended for gambling on tennis matches via online sportsbooks. While the online sportsbooks may be legal, the ATP has forbidden its members to engage in any form of sports betting, online or otherwise.

The latest protagonist, Galimberti, joins Alessio Di Mauro, Daniele Bracciali, Potito Starace in the ATP online gambling 'dog box' for placing bets on tennis matches between their fellow players using online sports betting websites.

Said ATP executive vice-president, Gayle David Bradshaw, 'The ATP's Tennis Anti Corruption Program is clear regarding its policy on the placing of bets on tennis matches by ATP players, associates of players and staff. It states unambiguously that gambling in any form on tennis matches will not be tolerated.'
