Stakes Victory for Duke of Mischief - 01-13-10 |
January 13 - An unexpected win by Duke of Mischief in Sunday's Ft.
Lauderdale Stakes, left many people, including the colt's own trainer,
surprised.
The four year old runner had 20/1 shots of winning the prestigious $100,000
horserace that was due to take place on Gulfstream Park's s inner turf track.
However, at the last minute, the race was shifted to the park's main dirt
track, due to heavy rainfall on Saturday.
This lead to at least seven runners - almost half the contenders - pulling
out at the last minute.
Duke of Mischief's trainer, David Hawkes, was left with a dilemma. On the one
hand, he wanted the colt to run, yet on the other hand, the Ft. Lauderdale
Stakes were specifically meant to be a prep race for the $500,000 Sunshine
Millions Turf at the same track later this month.
In the end, despite his unhappiness with the change in surface, Hawkes
decided to let Duke of Mischief contend.
It was fateful decision, as from the start, the colt seemed set to take the
race.
Hawkes was just as surprised as everyone else when Duke of Mischief and his
jockey Eibar Coae crossed the finishing line first, beating Kiss the Kidd (5/1)
and Mambo Meister (2/1).
Hawkes is now left with more questions than answers after the race.
"Now I don't know whether to let him back in the Sunshine Million Turf or
take him to California for the Sunshine Millions Classic," he said after the
race.
