RGA Defends Online Gambling - 06-20-09

June 20 - The Remote Gambling Association took some time this week to defend the integrity of online gaming and called for European governments to respect the rights and requirements of online operators.

Speaking at the "Gambling in the Internal Market" conference organized by the Academy of European Law and the EU, the RGA reiterated its commitment to social responsibility and emphasized some of the false claims that were heard at the conference about online gambling.

The RGA said that it heard too often the claim that the online gambling industry is only interested in self regulation and that money laundering is high in the industry.

The group pointed out that it is continuously working with a number of global jurisdictions in order to create effective licensing systems.

The RGA strongly denied that money laundering was more of a problem in the online gambling industry than it was in other sectors. The group said that it was wrapping up research that proved this point, and the results would be published soon.

The Chief Executive of the RGA, Clive Hawskwood said at the 2 day conference: "We understand the interest of the state monopolies in maintaining the status quo but they and anyone who has a genuine interest in these issues should engage in a constructive and more objective debate instead of relying on myths and misinformation."

"Genuine player protection, with non discriminatory standards for all operators, should be the core of any European policy on gambling," he continued. Appropriate levels of licensing and regulation can deal with all the risks associated with gambling, irrespective of whether it is on or offline, and irrespective of whether it is provided by state or private sector operators."
