Poland Temporarily Ends Sponsor Partnership with Unibet - 03-10-10 |
March 10 - Unibet, the Swedish gambling group, which had previously
signed sponsorship deals to back the second division of Poland's football
league, has been temporarily suspended from the agreement.
This is due to anti gambling laws that kicked in to the country at the
beginning of the year.
However, Poland was keen to keep the door of cooperation open and said that
the suspension was only temporary at this stage.
The suspension means that Unibet will not be allowed to splash its names on
Polish stadiums and the second division (known as Polish First League) will not
be allowed to carry its name.
The Head of Marketing for Unibet in Central and Eastern Europe, Kasia Davies
said about the suspension: "I am confident that the company Unibet as a title
sponsor of 1 League, despite the short period of cooperation with the Polish
Football Association, has contributed significantly to the development of games
in terms of organization and marketing."
Davies said that involvement in sport sponsorship, especially football, has
been included in Unibet's marketing strategy for many years. "We hope that soon
all doubt arising from the new gambling law will be clarified, and if there is a
chance to continue our cooperation, we will," said Davies.
Last year, Poland passed its new gambling laws that essentially banned all
forms of gambling outside casinos.
The laws extended to advertising with gambling links.
Many Polish sporting teams are reliant on the sponsorships of top
international gambling operators such as BetClick,
bwin and Bet-at-Home.
As a result of the suspension, Unibet will not be transferring payment to 18
football clubs in the second division league, as had been agreed under the
sponsorship deal.
