Poker Players Alliance Spends Big on Lobbying - 02-26-08 |
February 26 - It has been reported that last year the Poker Players Alliance (PPA)
spent $900,000 on lobbying the US federal government to reverse its
online gambling legislation that restricts US poker fans from enjoying playing
online poker.
The PPA is a non-profit organization that has a membership of poker players and fans
from all over United States, who together stand to defend and support the
game of poker, as well as promote it, maintain its integrity, and protect the
rights of players.
Last year in Washington DC, the PPA lobbied on a bill that was aimed at exempting online poker
from the current law that restricts online gambling as a whole. It also lobbied
on legislation that would effectively legalize as well as regulate the online
gambling industry in the US.
Currently the PPA represents 800,000 members across America, all of whom would
love to the see the 'prohibition-styled' ban on online gambling scrapped. This would allow
them the free choice to play poker online, and legally be able to fund their
poker room accounts.
While its is not currently illegal to play poker online in the United States, it
is illegal for US banks, financial institutions and credit-card companies to
process online gambling-related payments. This means that countless Americans
have no way to fund their accounts.
In addition, as a result of the US online gambling ban, the majority of the
world's leading online gambling operations no longer accept US players for fear
of reprisal from the US Justice Department.
In the past two years, there have been many arrests and subsequent prosecutions
of online gambling executives while transiting in the United States.
