Poker Legend Chip Reese Passes Away - 12-06-07 |
December 6 - David 'Chip' Reese, who was considered one of the world's most
talented poker players, has passed away in his sleep aged just 56 at his home in
Las Vegas, Nevada, and will be sorely missed by the professional poker
community.
The poker pro was discovered in his home on Tuesday this week by his son, and
was thought to have died after suffering from a bout of pneumonia.
Said long-time friend of Reese and poker legend, Doyle Brunson, 'I knew Chip for
over 35 years and in all that time I never saw him get mad or even raise his
voice. He had one of the best dispositions of anyone I've ever known and was
certainly one of the best poker players who ever lived.'
In the early 1970s Reese was en route to study at the prestigious Stanford
University business school in California when he got side-tracked in Las Vegas where he was
bitten by the poker bug, and never left, making professional poker his career and Las Vegas
his home.
While Reese won three coveted World Series of Poker bracelets during his
lifetime, including a $1.8 million HORSE event in 2006 that combined five poker
disciplines, he shied away from the limelight and focused instead on
high-stakes cash games.
World Series of Poker commissioner, Jeffrey Pollack, described Reese as 'one of
greatest cash-game poker players of his time'. Reese was famously part of the
'old school' of poker pros including Doyle Brunson, Walter Clyde 'Puggy' Pearson, and Thomas
'Amarillo Slim' Preston Jr.
A service has been planned for Reese in Las Vegas tomorrow.
