Playing Position In Online Poker

Author: Marc Weinberg

You want to sit down in a hurry when it comes to online poker. You're in a rush to click on that seat before someone else in the world snags it, so why should you care where you sit? Positional strategy in online poker is crucial and here are some basic strategy tips about where you are seated at a poker table.

The most basic point is this: The guy on your immediate left has an advantage over you at every poker table. The guy on yoru immediate right is at an equal disadvantage throughout.

Why is this the case? You will nearly always get to act after the guy on your immediate right (with the exception of when you are the small blind) and you will always have to act before the guy on your left, except when you are the button and he is the small blind. If you're at a full ten-handed table that's a lot of hands where you are at one guy's mercy while another guy is at yours.

The strategy of positional play states that it is in your favor to sit to the immediate left of a player you believe is weaker than you. If you find a hole in a guy's game the best way to exploit that hole and worry away at it until it becomes a gaping wound is to act right after he does. If he is a limper you can raise him. If he's a maniac you can isolate him. If he's a rock you can get out of his way before he rolls over you.

However, it is also a good idea to play nice with the guy on your immediate left. If the two of you are exactly equal in ability he will hold an edge over you. Try not to antagonize him as he can make your life as miserable as you're making the poor guy's life on your right.

A lot of players understand the macro-perspective of positional play, namely that the button is good while the blinds are bad. It's harder to raise under the gun and hold on to win than it is to raise on the button and win often. That's basic poker. But look at the personal battles on a micro-level as well. Try to avoid playing super-aggressively at the guy on your left since he has that positional edge over you. And if players request seat changes so that they can be on your left ask yourself if you're the sucker at the table!

Remember to isolate those poker fish by sitting on their immediate left, and try to avoid those sharks who want to do the same thing to you.
