Online Gambling Rises as Land Casinos Decrease - 03-11-10

March 11 - If ever there was proof that the popularity of online casino gambling was on the rise.

Mintel International Group has shown in a widespread study that one of the major causes of the decline of popularity in land casinos is the increase in popularity of internet gambling.

There were in fact two factors that were determined to lead to a downturn in land casino revenues - the economic situation and internet betting.

However, a senior analyst at the group, Bill Hulkower  commented on the drop in numbers of adults visiting land casinos from 35% in 2001 to 30% in recent years.

"The shift has been gradual," he said, "which suggests that this is not a result of the recession. Land casinos may be losing audience to the increasingly compelling entertainment offerings in the home; such as HDTV, high end video game systems and the internet, including internet gambling."

According to other statistics in the report, 12% of US adults visited an online casino in the past year, despite the attempts by politicians to end this form of gambling through draconian laws such as the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act.

Men were definitely more attracted to online gambling than women - of those who played online, it was men who had visited a betting site five times in the past year, compared to once a year for women.

The average age for those visiting casinos was 25- 34, with men risking more than women on average.

"Men take more risks in their gambling behaviour and will remain the key customer base for casino operations," said Hulkower.

Mintel noted that those adults who visited land based casinos, tended to favour Indian reservation casinos (27%), Vegas (24%) and Atlantic City (12%).
