Online Gambling Jurisdiction Fights US Ban |
November 28 - One of the world's leading online gambling jurisdictions, the
Caribbean islands of Antigua and Barbuda are continuing their fight against the
United States online gambling with the help of the World Trade Organization (WTO)
Dispute Settlement Body (DSB).
Earlier this year both Antigua and the United States government approached the
DSB regarding their dispute over America's online gambling ban. Antigua is
claiming that the US has not complied with DSB measures, recommendations and
rulings issued in April last year.
A two day DSB hearing kicked off yesterday where a three member panel will hear
Antigua's rebuttal of the United States' claim that it has not complied with the
April rulings.
Said Antigua and Barbuda Minister of Finance and the Economy, Dr. Errol Cort,
'This is just another step in our ongoing efforts to ensure that the United
States complies with its obligations under WTO agreements and implement the
rulings and recommendations of the DSB.'
'We believe that every WTO member has an obligation to play by the rules and
accept and implement the outcomes of an established judicial process all members
agreed to for resolving their trade disputes,' he said.
The dispute between Antigua and Barbuda and the US began back in 2003, as
America started to crack down on online gambling, an industry that has become
one of the most lucrative for Antigua and Barbuda's small economy.
