Online Casino Pays Back over Half a Million Dollars - 12-30-09 |
December 30 - A Swedish woman, who embezzled enormous amounts of funds from
her employees in order to feed her gambling addiction, was sentenced to three
years in prison.
The twist to this story is that the unnamed
online
casino where the woman played has voluntarily agreed to return
nearly 5 million kroner ($670K) that the woman lost at her gambling sessions at
the site.
The woman was charged with stealing as much as 15 million kroner to pay for
her gambling, a third of which she spent at the tables on the site.
But while the rules at the site specifically state that players are not
allowed to lose more than 2500 in one day at the tables, the woman claims that
this condition was not followed.
In fact, she showed that she had lost up to 1 million kroner in a single
night.
The woman had also been handed bonuses worth thousands.
When the online casino heard of the case, and also that the company had to
lay off staff to cover the losses incurred from the stolen money, it voluntarily
approached the company's owners and offered to return the 4.9 million kroner.
The site requested a confidentiality agreement signed by the woman's
employers in return.
"It's obvious that the gaming company understood something is wrong," said
the prosecutor, Kenneth Brattstrom. "If the woman's account of how the company
acted is accurate, she has definitely been used and therefore it's appropriate
for a repayment to take place."
