Online Betting Site Tries to Sponsor ATP Event - 06-28-09

June 28 - Online gaming in Germany remains a charged issue despite the State Treaty on Gaming which was implemented about six months ago. The latest is the title sponsorship of the ATP Bet-at-home.com Tennis Open in Hamburg. The tournament has been held in Hamburg for 100 years, but financial concerns led to doubt as to whether the tradition would continue. Luckily, Bet-at-home.com stepped in to sponsor the nine-day tennis tournament. The sponsorship includes naming rights and on-site brand integration as well as online promotion.

Michael Stich, a former Davis Cup and Wimbledon champion and the director of the tournament was quoted as saying that "...with Bet-at-home.com we have won over an international listed company which fits perfectly with the tournament at Hamburg Rothenbaum, one of biggest 20 ATP tournaments of the ATP World Tour 500." He further expressed his appreciation that Bet-at-home.com is preserving the tradition of holding the tournament at the Hamburg location. Stich expressed relief that the tournament would not be relocated to another country.

The Hamburg tournament is the highest ranked tennis tournament in Germany. It is part of the ATP World Tour 500, and is listed among the top 20 tennis tournaments worldwide.

While Bet-at-home.com has its supporters in its bid for title sponsorship of the tournament, the City of Hamburg has said that they will not provide the €200,000 of funding they promised unless Bet-at-home.com removes its title sponsorship. It seems unlikely, however, that Bet-at-home.com will comply, as the conflict between German laws and European laws makes it unclear whether Bet-at-home.com is acting in a legal fashion. German officials have not enforced the State Treaty on Gaming in other instances due to the confusion.
