New Sports Betting Ad Row in Sweden - 09-03-08 |
September 3 - The Northern European countries are constantly being proclaimed
a battle ground between state owned gambling companies and privately owned
operators trying to break the state monopoly on local gambling markets in
whichever way possible.
Sports betting companies are continuously testing the boundaries and
provoking the state in an attempt to draw attention to their cause, with the
latest case taking place in Umea, Sweden during an ice hockey game.
The Swedish Ice Hockey Association was angered when a NordicBet
advertisement promoting its site and services was displayed prominently on the
ice. According to the association, this type of advertising directly contravenes
an agreement that it holds with the state-owned gambling operator, Svenska Spel
that disallows member teams to advertise its competition.
The association has now vowed to take action against the host team,
Bjorkloven for contravening the agreement. The Chief Executive Officer for
Bjorkloven said that his team will take full responsibility for the incident,
despite the fact that he believed in good faith that the ban on advertising
competition companies only applied during the ice hockey league season.
Naturally, NordicBet is up in arms against the Swedish Ice Hockey
Association's decision to take punitive steps against Bjorkloven, calling it a
'scandal'. The marketing manager for the sports betting company pointed out that
the game played out in Umea had nothing to do whatsoever with the Swedish ice
hockey league, since Finnish teams were also taking part.
He also said that should Bjorkloven be fined, NordicBet would step up to help
and would also continue supporting the team, whatever the outcome.
