New BC Casino Shuts Down After a Day - 07-22-10

July 22 - The long awaited PlayNow.com online casino, launched by British Columbia Lottery Corporation, became a PR's nightmare after the site crashed on opening day.

The BC casino had so many visitors on its first day that the BCLC was forced to admit that the system could not cope with the numbers and had to shut the site down temporarily.

There were originally fears that hackers managed to enter the system and access important information, however the group said that a third party security review found that this was not the case.

Players found that when they signed in to their accounts, they were taken to another account's details, including personal information, the time of the other player's gaming sessions and even account balances.

This irked opponents of the new site, who have been waiting to show why its launch was a bad idea in the first place.

"If the government is going to get into online gaming, they need to protect people's privacy," noted Shane Simpson of the New Democratic Party. "People want to be able to trust their private information, from credit card numbers to gambling histories, is not being compromised."

The British Columbia Lottery Corporation said that credit card information had not been revealed in the data crossover.

Analysts have rushed to defend PlayNow.com's unfortunate beginning and said that this is not the first time that this type of thing has happened in the industry.

The BCLC reassured players that the site will be up and running as soon as possible.
