Minnesota Bows to Online Gambling Pressure - 06-08-09 |
June 8 - Last month, ISP's in the state of Minnesota were shocked to find that the Department of Public Safety were demanding that they block access to internet gambling sites, effective immediately.
The public, online gambling and non gambling parties alike, were up in arms against the decision, calling it a slap in the face for all of those who valued democracy.
Groups such as the Poker Players Alliance, which lobbies on behalf of the online poker industry were hugely instrumental in backing Representative Pat Garofalo's efforts to fight the action through a specially created bill, while the Interactive Media Gaming Association also leant its weights to the fight.
It seems that these efforts paid off after it was announced on Friday that Minnesota has dropped its enforcement action against the Internet Service Providers.
It is believed that the Minnesota Department of Public Safety did not realize just what a backlash it would face from the public, nor did it consider the huge legal battle that was in store for it if it went ahead with its plans.
"This is a great day for internet freedom," noted Pat Garofalo. "In the spirit of cooperation and in recognition of the recession of these notices, I am more than happy to withdraw my bill and in its place sponsor a discussion aimed at establishing a framework for regulating and licensing the online gaming industry."
The regional manager in Minnesota for the PPA, Matthew Werden said: "Minnesota poker players made our voices heard, the state listened and ended its ill advised and improper attempt to circumvent the rights of Minnesota poker players. We commend Representative Garofalo for literally tackling this misguided effort head on and resolving it without incident."
