Malaysia Cracks Down on Internet Gambling - 07-06-09 |
July 6 - The online gambling legislation currently being used by the United States has been adopted by Malaysia as the local government takes tougher steps to control internet betting.
It has been reported that the Malaysian government has turned to the country's central bank to try and find ways to stop online gambling, very much like the laws pertaining to the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act in the United States.
The bank will be asked to stop the transfer of funds to and from online gambling sites, despite the fact that this method has been tried without success in the US and other countries around the world.
Nevertheless, the Malaysian government is adamant on getting the industry under control. A spokesman said that 2500 online gambling sites have been identified and that it is continuing with its policy of closing down underground gambling halls.
A Minister in the Malaysian government, Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said about the move: "Online gambling is a serious matter and, if left unchecked, it could give rise to other crimes such as illegal money lending, snatch theft, gangsterism and robbery."
The minister also said that local authorities have raided over 3000 gambling and betting locations around the country and arrested 2600 people in connection with these activities.
It remains to be seen how long it will take Malaysia to realize that Prohibition simply doesn't work and that the only true answer to is a legal and regulated online gambling industry.
