Kyl Frustrated with Pace of Internet Gambling Regulations - 05-02-08

May 2 - Responding to growing pressure against the country's Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, Senator Jon Kyl, chief architect of the controversial internet gambling regulations, is said to be frustrated by the slow pace of the Federal Reserve and Department of Treasury as they struggle to come up with regulations to enforce the ban.

The Republican said: "The longer it goes, the less certainty there is." According to Kyl, the internet gambling regulations should have been put in place a year ago already.

Federal Reserve and Treasury representatives recently told a special Congressional hearing of the near impossibility of enforcing the online gambling ban, due to the ambiguity in the law's wording and the huge changes that would be required in their systems to even attempt blocking all gambling transactions to and from the United States.

A growing political movement, lead by Barney Frank and Ron Paul, is calling for the UIGEA to be abolished, and replaced with a law that regulates and legalizes the internet gambling industry in the United States. Frank has successfully garnered the support of close to 50 politicians for his H.R. 5767.

In response, Kyl said: "I think the people who are violating the law need to know that they're not going to be able to get away with it, and I think that the failure to get these regulations promulgated on time has perhaps given some hope, and it's given life even to an idea over in the House of Representatives to put a moratorium on the regulations."

Kyl is evidently not too disturbed with the thought of Frank's proposed law. "I would be upset if something like that were to be adopted by the House," he said, and then added, "I'm not sure that the momentum is there to actually get it done."
