French Tennis Online Betting Conflict Heats Up - 04-22-08

April 22 - When leading sports betting site, Betfair.com, voided wagers on a match that was played out last year in Poland between Nikolay Davydenko and Martin Vassallo Arguella because of supposed irregular betting patterns, tennis federations sat up and started to take note of what they considered a growing problem in the sports betting world.

The French Tennis Federation took steps to sue Betfair, BWin, and Ladbrokes, and demanded a court injunction that would stop them from taking bets on the upcoming French Open at Roland Garros stadium at the end of May. The Federation also calls for fines of 50,000 Euros a day if these companies violate the terms of the injunction and persist with tennis online betting.

In response, BWin, one of Europe's top sports betting companies, filed a slander suit with French courts and is claiming 1 Million Euros in damages because of the comments made by the Federation when it launched its own court case.

The French Tennis Federation has taken a number of steps to counter irregular tennis online betting in the weeks leading up to the French Open. It has launched an anonymous hotline that will allow players and trainers to report any approaches that they may have had for 'fixing' a match. In addition, no computers or mobile phones will be allowed to be used during any of the matches in the event.

The European Gaming and Betting Association has countered the French Tennis Federation's claims that the internet and online betting companies taint the reputation of the sport. They said that, in fact, the internet left "a perfect audit trail, one that can, where appropriate, be shared with regulators and other authorities in order to trace bets and hence provide valuable evidence in the fight against fraud."
