EU Slams US in New Online Gambling Report - 06-15-09

June 15 - A complaint by the Remote Gambling Association to the European Commission, led the latter to begin an investigation into the online gambling policies of the United States.

After a lengthy enquiry, where the EU examined the problems facing European based companies who had to flee the US market after the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act was passed in 2006, the Commission issued an interim report in March 2009.

On June 10, the EU issued its final report on the issue, where it ruled that the gaming laws in the United States irrevocably violated international trade laws.

The spokesman for the Safe and Secure Internet Gambling Initiative (SSIGI), Jeffrey Sandman, said: "The European Commission report provides yet another reason why the administration and Congress should support pending legislation to regulate internet gambling, which would resolve the trade agreement violation and better protect consumers."

"The Obama Administration should seek to forge a new direction on internet gambling," continued Sandman, "rather than keeping in place a protectionist trade policy that hypocritically discriminates against foreign online gambling operators."

The European Commission made it clear, however, that it was open to negotiations with the United States and would rather go down the path of finding a peaceful solution than seek compensation for loss of revenue that could cost the US billions of dollars in the long run.

The EU also said that it would prefer to avoid legal action and reach a better solution.
