EPFL Backs French Online Gambling Bill - 08-07-09

August 7 - The French Finance Minister, Eric Woerth, received a support letter for his government's draft bill on internet gambling from a powerful group.

The EPFL (European Professional Football Leagues) wrote to Woerth, conveying the group's full support for the bill that is to be discussed this week in the French Parliament.

The EPFL represents 29 member Leagues and nearly 1000 affiliated football clubs.

The group believes that with the growing number of sports betting services on the internet comes the rise of the potential to fix matches and the growth of illegal gambling syndicates. The EPFL indicated its concern for the reputation of football if these types of activities were uncovered.

The Chief Executive Officer of EPFL, Emanuel Macedo de Medeiros, said in his letter: "By establishing a clear framework and a consistent and effective enforcement regime, we believe that the French draft bill provides a balanced and adequate response to efficiently combat illegal betting, while ensuring, at the same time, the indispensable protection to the commercial property rights of sports bodies."

"We hope this initiative may encourage other EU Member States as well as the relevant EU institutions to follow the French Government example and support similar measures," wrote Macedo de Medeiros.

The French draft bill seeks to regulate the sports betting industry through the introduction of strict measures and business licensing criteria.

The country is hoping that this type of legislation will help fight illegal betting, ensure the good reputation of all sports types and protect consumers against shady sites.
