Dutch Online Gambling Decision Delayed - 02-11-08 |
February 11 - A crucial vote by Dutch Parliament to allow Holland's gambling
monopoly permission to expand its field of operations to include online gambling
services, has been recently been postponed, indefinitely.
The Dutch Senate vote to decide if Holland's national gambling monopoly, Holland
Casino, should start offering online gambling services and facilities has been
put on hold at the request of Justice Minister Ernst Hirsch Ballin.
Justice Ballin took the decision to postpone the vote after early indications were
that the majority of Holland's Senators were in favor of voting against the plan to
introduce online gambling into Holland Casino's portfolio.
In anticipation of the vote, Holland Casino has recently been working in close
association with leading online gambling software developer, Cryptologic,
presumably to help put in place a successful online gambling arm in place.
However, many gambling experts feel that the insistence of the European
Commission (EC) to ensure European Union (EU) member states implement and follow
fair and non-discriminatory trade practices between EU members may be the cause
of Dutch resistance.
Up until now, the EC has insisted that EU members follow the trading bloc's
principles and has so far issued warnings against 10 state-run European gambling
monopolies.
