Dutch National Casino Being Sued by Problem Gambler - 09-09-08

September 9 - Damning evidence was given in a Utrecht court court last week after it was alleged that Holland Casino, the state run gambling operation, does not protect its problem gamblers more, allowing them to toll up massive losses.

These accusations were made by a Dutch citizen, a self confessed problem gambler, who is suing Holland Casino for losses totaling 2 million Euros. According to the gambler, he requested to be added to Holland Casino's self-exclusion list on a number of occasions, and even though he had been assured that this had been done, he was still allowed back into the casino where his losses increased.

While the Dutch government believed in good faith that Holland Casino goes by its strategy that it does everything in its power to assist problem gamblers by providing its staff with training to recognize their excessive gambling habits, evidence given by the company's head of security in two main cities painted another picture. "Holland Casino does not keep a record of the amounts won or lost by individual clients during each visit," said head of security for the company in Enschede and Utrecht. "I am unable to evaluate players' behavior, do not have any insight into the amount of money people carry on them when they enter the casino, nor in the amount of money they spend on chips."

The 40 year old gambler alleges that he requested self exclusion - a policy whereby self-recognized problem gamblers can ask the casino not to allow them on to the premises - in 1992, which was granted for six months. After going through counseling, he was back on the casino floor and ten years later, in 2002, he asked for a lifetime of self exclusion. This was provided for him in writing by Holland Casino.

However, despite these promises, Holland Casino eventually let the problem gambler back in, first on a limited basis and then with no restrictions whatsoever.

The man has admitted to have had opportunities to stop gambling in the past.
