Dutch Government Lets Woman Keep Unibet Win - 06-23-09 |
June 23 - A Dutch woman's 4 million Euros seem to be safe for the moment, after a ruling by a Dutch court that it would not seize the funds, despite the fact that the woman won the money after betting at an 'illegal' site run by Unibet. The government, however, will rather benefit from the woman's winnings in the form of taxing - by laying claim on about 1 million Euros.
Unibet has been serving the Dutch online gambling market for a number of years, but has recently been told to leave the country's market, following a decision by the Dutch government to block foreign companies from operating online gambling sites within its borders. The government is also cracking down on these foreign online gambling sites.
The unnamed 33 year old Dutch woman, who won 4.3 million Euro last Sunday playing at a Unibet run site, said that she is OK with about a quarter of the proceeds going to the tax man, but that she wanted the rest of the money to be kept in her hands to make her and her family's life easier.
The Dutch government has been coming under pressure lately for planned measures to impose criminal penalties on financial institutions who continue to assist foreign online gambling companies from operating within the country. The European Commission condemned the plans as a clear breach of the European Treaty which encourages freedom of trade throughout European countries.
The Dutch Minister of Justice, Hirsch Ballin, recently approved the creation of a gaming authority which would help control the Dutch online and land based gambling markets.
