Dinaburg Latvian FC Under Probe for Match Fixing - 10-08-09 |
October 8 - In the unfortunate case of bad sportsmanship leading to fraud,
the President and Head Coach of the Latvian football club, FC Dinaburg,
were banned for life after an investigation found that the two bet on games and
fixed results.
The matter was first brought to light after UEFA's Betting Fraud Detection
System highlighted suspicious betting patterns.
Following the information received, the Latvian Football Federation decided
to take action and discovered that the Oleg Gavrilov, president of the football
club, and its head coach, Tamaza Pertia, had placed bets on the outcome of the
team's matches.
Proof was offered by the Latvian Football Federation after a game was played
in the town of Daugavpils.
"The idea was that they either lost the game or arranged a particular
result," said a spokesman for the Federation, Martins Hartmanis.
As a result, Gavrilov and Pertia were banned for life, while Dinaburg was
banned from the rest of the season.
This is not the first time that Dinaburg has been disqualified from a season
on similar charges. In 2007, the group was not allowed to play after it was
found that suspicious betting patterns had taken place in the Baltic League
pan-Baltic soccer tournament.
UEFA's Betting Fraud Detection System has been providing information to
members since July, following a decision by the Executive Committee to tackle
corruption in the game.
