Delay in UIGEA Implementation - 11-28-09 |
November 28 - Speculation is high that the US State Treasury has decided to
delay the implementation of the controversial Unlawful Internet Gambling
Enforcement Act (UIGEA) for at least six months.
While no official confirmation has been made yet, the chairman of the
Interactive Media and Gaming Association (iMEGA) has made the announcement to
several leading media outlets.
Several government officials have been hard at work in recent weeks trying to
get the implementation of the bill delayed after it was supposed to go into
effect on December 1st.
The delay - if and when it is confirmed - will give online gambling
supporters such as Barney Frank, sufficient time to argue their case and
introduce a legalized and regulated industry in the United States.
"It's encouraging that you've had this stay on the compliance, but it's
unfortunate that it took this long," said Joe Brennan Jr, of iMEGA.
"We should all hope that in the next six months, a bill that already has 63
co sponsors can be heard," he said, referring to Barney Frank's HR 2267 that
creates a full licensing and regulatory framework for the industry.
The House Financial Services Committee is due to hear the two bills
introduced by Frank next week.
"Chairman Frank is clearly indicating his commitment to switch the
government's position on internet gambling, replacing attempts to prohibit the
activity with a regulatory framework where consumers are protected," said iMEGA
spokesperson, Michael Waxman. "Chairman Frank's commitment is further reinforced
by scheduling this hearing and taking up this issue on the heels of the push for
financial industry reform, which has been the committee's exclusive focus the
last six months."
Other organizations that have been pressuring the government to delay the law
include the powerful Poker Players Alliance, the National Thoroughbred Racing
Association and the American Greyhound Track Operators Association.
