Could Finland be Next to Dump Online Gambling - 01-16-08 |
January 16 - Just a few weeks after Germany announced that it would ban its
citizens from gambling online as of January this year, fellow EU member state,
Finland, has grabbed the online gaming spotlight with news about possible
measures it may introduce that will affect the country's online poker
players.
A report recently commissioned by Finland's Ministry of Social Affairs and
Health has recommended that the country amend its current gambling laws to
include a clause that would effectively force Finnish online poker
players to 'claim back their losses' from one of many parties.
These include the online poker room itself, or the credit card company that
processed the respective player's poker-related payments, or even the unlucky
player lucky enough to beat the respective player. Clearly this is not and
option and, if passed, the law will obviously force online poker rooms to ban
players from Finland.
While this certainly not good news for the online gambling industry, it's worse
news for Finland's hundreds of thousands of online poker fans. And worse even
for the global pro-online gambling cause, which believes that people in all
countries with Internet access should be able to choose for themselves whether
to gamble online or not.
Currently, the Finns spend approximately 150 million Euros at online poker rooms
per annum and are reportedly the 4th biggest gamblers in the world in terms of
online gambling spend per capita.
