Conservative Groups Spread Online Gambling Lies - 06-14-09 |
June 14 - As support for Rep. Barney Frank's bill to change the face of online gambling in the United States once and fall all grows, anti gambling groups are pulling all the stops to put obstacles in the bill's way.
Certain religious groups are so hell bent on stopping Frank that they have even resorted to sending false facts about online gambling to Congress, in the hope of frightening them into voting against the bill.
This week, religious groups sent a letter to Congress, stating among other things: "The prevalence of gambling addiction is three to four times higher with internet gambling versus non internet gambling."
Pro gambling groups have slammed these "facts" used by the religious groups, saying that there is absolutely scientific evidence to prove this point.
In fact, several studies by prestigious academic institutions have shown that internet gambling poses absolutely no danger is being more addictive than regular gambling.
All the studies, instead, call for the government to introduce a regulated and legalized internet gambling industry in the United States in order to control problem gambling.
The bill that Barney Frank wants to pass calls on the government to do just that - legalize and regulate the industry so that operators and gamblers alike can benefit.
One of the groups that signed the letter sent to Congress, Focus on the Family, had two of its members, Tom Minnery (President of American Values) and Dr. Richard Land attach their names. Other groups include the Southern Baptist Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, and the Family Research Council.
