Bookies Return Irish Bets - 11-25-09 |
November 25 - Disappointed Irish soccer fans who lost their dream of seeing
their national team play in the World Cup championships next year, are
being comforted by bookmakers across the UK by having their bets returned.
Bookies such as
Paddy Power and William Hill have decided to refund their
players who bet that Ireland would qualify for the World Cup, after the country
lost to France in play-offs on Wednesday night.
France promised itself a place in the competition due to take place in South
Africa next year, after player Thierry Henry allegedly controlled the ball with
his hand, winning 2-1 on aggregate.
Paddy Power will refund around £240,000 worth of bets to Irish fans who
saw their World Cup dreams dissipate before their eyes.
A Paddy Power blog summed up the events: "Luck of the Irish me arse! Not only
did FIFA change the rules to protect the big teams, but then we drew France and
that dirty little chief Henry chats us out of a place in the World Cup!"
"I know it's a small consolation but we're refunding £110,000 to all of
those who backed Ireland to qualify for next years finals as well as refunding
£140,000 on tonight's matches after we pledged to refund all losing/first
goalscorer, correct schore and scorecast bets placed on the match if Ireland won
the game in 90 minutes," concluded the blog.
William Hill also stated that the refunds would cost the company "a five
figure sum", but acknowledged that it was the only decent thing to do.
"Leaving aside any moral scruples and the fact that non one knows what would
have happened if the goal had been disallowed, William Hill feel that they are
being as fair as possible to everyone by returning stake money to those who bet
on the Irish going through," said a spokesman for the group, Graham Sharpe.
