The game of bingo has been played for centuries and can be traced back
as far as 1530, where in Italy, villagers would gather together to
play what was known then as 'Lo Giuco de Lotto'. A slightly different
version of the game evolved in France throughout the 1700's while in
Germany it was used as an educational tool to help children learn
subjects such as maths, spelling and history.
By 1929, the game of bingo had reached the USA and was known as 'beano'
as it was played with dried beans, a rubber stamp and a cardboard
sheet. The game could often been seen being played in the travelling
carnivals of the time and it was at one of these that Edwin Lowe - the
founder of what we now know as bingo - chanced upon a game.
Edwin Lowe was then just a New York toy salesman, but seeing how
popular 'beano' was with the carnival crowd, took it back to New York.
At first he simply invited friends to his apartment to play but soon
after he was approached by a priest in Pennsylvania who was having
trouble raising church funds. The priest had been holding bingo
competitions at his church, but with only a limited number of card
combinations, he found there were simply too many winners. Lowe decided
to employ the services of Carl Leffler, a Columbia University
Maths professor, to help him come up with multiple card combinations.
By 1930, Leffler had reportedly devised up to 6000 different types of
bingo cards.
By 1934, around 10,000 games of bingo were reportedly being played
around the USA and it became a staple fund raising event at churches,
schools and community halls.
The name bingo itself was coined by one of Edwin Lowe's friends, who
mistakenly called out 'bingo' instead of 'beano' during a game. Lowe
liked it so much, he marketed the game as bingo from then on.
