BetOnSports Ignores Federal Charges |
August 3 - Leading online sports book, BetOnSports, is apparently 'ignoring' a
U.S. federal criminal prosecution and civil case which is trying to shut down
the multi-billion dollar online gambling operation.
On Monday morning this week BetOnSports lawyers did not show up at the
arraignment to face criminal charges including racketeering, wire fraud and mail
fraud.
BetOnSports lawyers also failed to show at a civil hearing in the afternoon
where federal prosecutors requested the court to issue a ban to prevent the
company from doing business with U.S. customers.
In addition, the prosecutors are seeking to ensure that BetOnSports forfeits
over $4.5 billion in cash and assets.
They are building their case against the online gambling firm on the premise
that even though BetOnSports knew it was illegal, it allowed and even encouraged allowed American-based gamblers to place
bets worth billions of dollars online.
All eyes within the online gambling community are on the case because it could
set a precedent over the issue of the jurisdiction that American courts hold over
foreign companies that do business in the United States.
