BetonSports CEO Heads to Prison |
January 12 - A 2.5 year jail sentence has been imposed on the former Chief
Executive Officer of BetonSports, David Carruthers.
The charges officially brought against Carruthers were the illegal acceptance
of sports bets via the internet from US players and a District Court Judge,
Carol Jackson, found him guilty.
David Carruthers was arrested several years ago for running the internet
casino operation, and spent 32 days in jail.
Thereafter, he spent another 3.5 years under house arrest awaiting trail.
During this time, he reached a plea deal with the Department of Justice, that
he would admit to one count of racketeering conspiracy and admitting that he
knew that he had broken the
US
gambling laws.
In exchange, the DOJ said that it would drop all other charges held against
Carruthers.
In a sentencing last week, Carruthers received 33 months in prison after the
judge said that she doubted his claims that he truly believed that BetonSports
was a legitimate operation.
"I don't think you thought it was a gray area," stated Judge Jackson. "I
think you knew there would be ramifications for your conduct."
Carruther's lawyers had been hopeful that the judge would take into account
the long period of house arrest that their client had been under when sentencing
him.
Last year, BetonSports founder, Gary Kaplan was sentenced to 51 months in
prison and was ordered to forfeit $43 million to the government.
