Australian MP Causes Online Gambling Uproar - 12-03-09 |
December 3 - The Australian Senator Nick Xenophon, well known for his rabid
anti-gambling opinions, spoke at a public hearing held by the Productivity
Commission this week on the growth of online gambling in the country.
Xenophon caused an uproar among online gambling operations by suggesting that
Australian players who lose money at what he termed "illegal online gambling
sites", should not be forced to pay up.
The Senator suggested instead that these players simply call their banks and
have their transactions voided.
Operators such as the Australian BetChoice slammed Xenophon's comments and
said that it was impossible to distinguish between legal and illegal internet
gambling services. Australians should thus not be encouraged to disregard the
law, they said.
In his speech, Xenophon said that the country's gambling laws should be
consolidated, and states should share a united policy.
The Senator suggested that one national body should be created to oversee the
gambling laws of gaming machines and online gambling sites.
Other suggestions by the Senator that irked the gambling public was his call
to reduce the maximum bet on pokies from $20 to just $1 and that banks limit
cash withdrawals to $200 in ATM machines around casinos and gambling
establishments.
Nick Xenophon said that not enough was being done to stop the massive growth
of online gambling in Australia and he said there could be an even bigger
problem in the future as people start to use their mobile phones to access their
favorite sites.
