Ascot Sports Site May Have Closed Down - 05-13-08 |
May 13 - Players trying to access the Isle of Man licensed site, Ascot
Sports were met this weekend with a "temporarily unavailable due to system
maintenance" notice and the Malaysian media is speculating that the closure may
be more permanent than meets the eye.
The Malaysian mogul Tan Sri Vincent Tan, founder of several online wagering
sites, including Ascot Sports and the information portal AscotSportal.com,
took his well established land business to the internet after his operating
licenses were not renewed under new leadership in the country, despite him
having paying for a 25 year license.
Tan registered his businesses in the Isle of Man and went on to open several
successful sites ahead of the 2006 World Cup events, launching a
Philippines-based call center and a lottery game soon after.
Tan was in the news again last year when he launched a Chinese language
sports betting site known as Ascot eCasino. The "temporarily unavailable due to
system maintenance" notice also appeared on Tan's Chinese site, prompting
speculations that there was nothing coincidental about both sites being
maintained at the moment.
A Malaysian media report said that staff at Tan's Malaysian office were told
on Friday morning last week that the sites were closing down, and that the
decision was effective immediately.
Players trying to access the sites were also told that they could make
withdrawals from their accounts after accessing them, however they would not be
able to make deposits or wager at the sites. All attempts to reach the sites'
support teams were met with no response.
