ASA Bans Raunchy Online Poker Ads - 06-16-09 |
June 16 - Swank Poker has certainly earned itself the attention it sought after the tough UK Advertising Standards Authority pulled its ads from publication, deeming them too raunchy.
Swank Poker, now known as Red Cherry Poker, first ran a one page ad in the UK poker magazine, Flush. The ad had a decidedly curvy young woman cupping her breasts, with the text "Will you hold this pair for me?" running across the ad.
The poker room then ran a second promotion, also in Flush, claiming that Swank Poker could provide "the very best in poker action coupled with the finest erotic entertainment that the civilized world has to offer."
Ironically, it was the Remote Gambling Association that lodged a complaint about the ads with the Advertising Standards Authority, claiming that the ads linked poker gambling to sex and that young people or vulnerable people could be influenced negatively by the campaign.
Complaints were also made about rewards promised by the poker room in the form of "serious erotic action".
The ASA examined the matter and ruled that the ads do indeed breach the country's advertising codes that linked gambling to sexual success. In terms of the second complaint that vulnerable people were at risk, the authority ruled against the RGA, saying that the fact that the ads appeared in a magazine that targets 25-40 year olds means that the young and the vulnerable had little chance of viewing them.
Swank Poker, for its part, denied any wrongdoing and said that it had clearly spelled out that its services were only for adults. As for the rewards it offered, the poker room said that they were "instead of offering caps and T-shirts" like other sites did.
Nevertheless, because the first complaint was upheld, Swank Poker was ordered to remove the ads from the media.
