Tennis Betting Suspect Again At Wimbledon

Thursday, June 25, 2009

Betfair June 26- The Wimbledon Tennis Championship has begun, and there are already suspicions regarding questionable betting patterns that have taken place. Tennis authorities are investigating the betting for the match between Jurgen Melzer of Austria and American Wayne Odesnik.

Some bookmakers suspended betting after an unusually high number of bets were placed on a straight sets victory for Jurgen Melzer. Thousands of pounds were bet on a 3-0 result in Melzer`s favor. Although William Hill continued to allow betting, explaining that the swing in Melzer`s favor was within the boundaries of `reasonable expectation,` other bookmakers, such as Ladbrokes, Paddy Power and Sportingbet suspended betting.

Although Odesnik is only ranked number 109 in the world, and Melzer is the No. 26 seed, the bookmakers were alerted to possible irregularities in the betting when around £350,000 was bet on Melzer to win in straight sets, when a game such as this would usually attract only about £10,000 in this kind of betting.

In an interview with BBC Radio 4`s Today program, Mark Davies from Betfair said: "We have a memorandum of understanding with the Tennis Integrity Unit which allows them to see betting patterns of all the betting which takes place on our side and we alerted them to this."

Odesnik said that he had no idea about any betting irregularities in the Wimbledon competition and explained that he would not want to jeopardize his tennis future by being involved in any betting scams. When asked about the bookmakers` irregularities, Odesnik said "It`s only my second time playing here, I`m young, I`m here to play."

Once again Betfair and other bookies have done more to protect sports than harm it, and that should be noted by those who would smear the good name of online gambling.
