Super Bowl Betting Drops in Vegas

Tuesday, February 10, 2009

February 10 - It was good news and bad news in Las Vegas this year after the biggest sports event in the United States calendar came to an end. The 2009 Super Bowl proved that even it was not recession proof after numbers revealed that there had been a significant drop in gambling activity in Vegas this year.

Nevada is the only state in the United States were it is legal to gamble on sports events. As a result, casinos and betting shops are a hive of activity over the Super Bowl weekend, attracting thousands of gamblers keen to back their favorite team, as well as place wagers on a wide range of odds surrounding the sports event itself.

According to the figures released, betting on this year`s Super Bowl dropped by a very significant 11% compared to last year`s figures. This made it the worst figures posted since 2004.

Nevertheless, the same figures showed that Las Vegas sportsbookers made a sizeable profit from this year`s Super Bowl event. While they posted a $2.5 million loss following last year`s event, this year, Vegas bookies reported that they saw an overall profit of $6.7 million.

This was out of a total $81.5 million that the bookies took in as wagers for the Super Bowl.

The latest figures showing a decline in wagering activity in Las Vegas, only echoes the general sentiment in Las Vegas that things are looking bad in the current recession. In a time where people are losing their jobs and homes every day, and where every dollar counts, gambling is shunted to the bottom of the average citizen`s list of priorities.

Other statistics showed that Super Bowl bets placed online did not seem to have been affected by the recession.
