Antigua Finally Gets Some Online Gambling Fairness |
Friday, November 07, 2008
Antigua and unfair online gambling decisions have gone hand in hand in recent years. The tiny island nation has been violated repeatedly by the Americans at the WTO, and their original effort to be included in the UK`s white list failed.
But the twin island state of Antigua and Barbuda (to be precise) has now been successful in its application to the UK Secretary of State to be added to the country`s prestigious white list. Online casinos that are licensed by countries on this list are allowed to advertise their products to UK based consumers.
Following several years of conflict with the United States over the issue of online gambling, Antigua can finally sit back and enjoy the satisfaction of its new `whitelist` status in the UK.
"As recognized global leaders in the regulation of the remote gambling industry, we are proud of our high standards," said Director of Gaming for Antigua, Kaye McDonald. "The UK whitelisting reaffirms our commitment to adhere to strict principles in the supervision and oversight of this global industry and our current high level of success at doing so."
At the beginning of this year, Antigua, along with the Kahnawake Gaming Commission, failed to meet the UK criteria for white list status. However, after improving in areas that were pinpointed by the UK Ministry of Sport, Antigua reapplied to the UK Secretary of State, and the application was approved this week.
The UK Minister for Sport said that he was positive that "Antigua and Barbuda has the legal authority to regulate gambling and that its current system of regulation and licensing provides a robust and adequately resourced framework to uphold our shared objectives: to prevent gambling to become a source of crime; and to keep gambling fair and open and to protect children and vulnerable people."
The Minister of Finance for Antigua, Dr. Errol Cort said that he was very pleased with the UK`s decision and that the country looked forward to the expansion opportunities that were derived from the new status.
