Actors Forced To Become Bingo Show Hosts

Thursday, October 09, 2008

October 9 - The United States is seeing a strange phenomenon - that of once B grade actors vying for the part of host in popular bingo and other game shows. Many well-recognized but partially forgotten actors, especially from the television industry, are having their agents approach the producers of top bingo shows in the country in the hope of earning themselves the high profile job as host and presenter.

Possibly the best example of this was when Patrick Duffy, who played Bobby Ewing in the 1980`s prime time television drama, Dallas, took on the role as host of GSN`s Bingo America last year. While nobody is saying as much, Duffy didn`t quite fit the bill and the second season will be hosted by Richard Karn who played Tim Allen`s bearded co-show host in "Home Improvement".

Duffy is considering several Hollywood scripts for his comeback. We`re kidding. He was last seen eyeing unmonitored garbage cans on Santa Monica boulevard. The man`s an avid recycler, and certainly not eating out of those cans. That might be construed as defamatory.

Commenting on Karn`s appointment, GSN stated: "Richard is a perfect fit for all the exciting changes viewers will see. Patrick Duffy was a terrific host and we loved working with him." Karn was heard to mutter that it was either this or hanging himself, but those mutters could not be verified for sure.

The Executive Producer of GSN`s Bingo America, Andrew Glassman, noted that today`s bingo show hosts have a much bigger job than ever before. Viewers are more selective with their show selection, considering that they have more choice these days. As such, show producers have to hire the right person, with the right personality and the ability to keep viewers interested from beginning to end.

"The demands on this generation of hosts have never been greater," said Glassman. "The shows are much more complicated than in the past. There are complex stunts, there is expensive lighting and numerous music cues." And of course Bingo has to be explained in terms that the average American game show watcher can comprehend.

The Executive Producer of shows such as "Who Wants to be a Millionaire" and "Chain Reaction", Michael Davies agrees. "There wasn`t much back stories on the shows of the 50`s and 60`s," he said. "You asked contestants what they did and where they came from. But now as a host on a lot of shows you have to build a contestant`s back story and a conflict and that final moment of `will they or won`t they`?" Is he kidding? Their "back story" (I needed the money); the conflict (they`d like to win and beat the other contestants) - what a pompous twit.

These are the top online bingo sites that we recommend, and we promise you won`t bump into any failed TV actors or obnoxious TV producers while you`re playing there.
