NFL Football Betting Tragedies |
Monday, September 17, 2007
September 17 - I knew it was going to be a long day in the NFL when I woke up to find that the Browns were beating the Bengals 21-20, and the game was still in the second quarter. This is the same Browns team that got drilled by the Steelers, and the same Bengals team that beat the Ravens - a week earlier.
The Browns went on to score 51 points, which is the same total of points they scored in their last seven games combined (this is an approximation - it might actually be more than they scored, look it up and let me know). They beat the Bengals straight up and my NFL football betting bankroll, until then John Holmes-sized in it`s thickness was now starting to look a little more human-sized.
It was just the beginning: The Colts failed to cover against the Titans, and then the Broncos blew a 17-3 lead against the woeful Raiders. That was a very unlucky game because the Raiders couldn`t move the ball in the air, nor could they stop the Broncos running game. This didn`t stop the Broncos from giving up a safety, an onside kick, falling for a lame double-pump to give up a 45 yd TD, and then throwing an INT off their own player`s helmet which was promptly returned for another TD!
The Broncos then won the game by 3 points, but that mattered not to me, since I needed them to win by 11 and those hopes were dashed long before the game went into OT.
What else could go wrong? Oh yes, the Rams couldn`t beat the 49ers at home, the Giants were mauled at home as well by the Packers, and then the Ravens failed to cover against an anemic Jets team.
Fortunately, I had taken one underdog, so that would help my depleted bankroll. Unfortunately, the underdog in question was Buffalo, who completed 2(!) passes in the first half and managed 3 total points against the Steelers, who managed many many more.
I also had the Cowboys/Dolphins `Under`, which looked great at half time with 16 points combined on the board, only to explode in the 4th quarter as they ended up scoring 57 combined points in total, or something along those lines. I tuned out once it zoomed past the early 40s and the bet was lost.
Then there were a couple of bright spots, for me anyway. I did have the Texans at the Panthers, and boy David Carr never looked worse now that Schaub is at the reins. Can you imagine how the Falcons feel? They traded away this guy and left their franchise in the hands of a thug whose hands were busy choking out the lives of dogs.
The Falcons, who are inept, also managed to cover against heavy favorites - but anyone who bets on the Jaguars to cover a big spread deserves to lose.
The quickest fall from grace: The Saints were blown out for the second week in a row, this time as favorites against a bad Bucs team. I had a bad feeling about laying points on the road with this New Orleans team - it seems they bought into the hype from last season and are not yet prepared for the rigours of the regular season. There is a lot of parity in the NFL, and if the Saints spent less time appearing on TV and more time working out in the offseason they wouldn`t look so overmatched. This is a talented team, and will improve, but they may not make the playoffs, which is a big surprise to me anyway.
