Friday, December 14, 2007
The World Trade Organization (WTO) is set to rule on Antigua`s damages
request tomorrow and Mark Mendel, the attorney representing Antigua, is reported
to have said that he anticipates a triumph in a compensation claim which
would be as much as $3.4 billion a year in in damages relate to online gambling.
The WTO ruled in 2005 that the US was discriminating against offshore
companies in only allowing local companies to provide horse racing wagering. The
US response that Antigua`s claims should only amount to $500,000.
Antigua has built a very successful online gambling licensing jurisdiction.
The prosecution further argues possible cross-retaliation in its case which
relates to copyright protections on American movies, music and software which
should allows its manufacturers to export products to the US.
The case has been going for two years and the industry awaits the ruling with
a lot of anticipation.
